Nokia X, Nokia’s first Android-powered Smartphone - the Rumours

More hot news from the Mobile World Congress 2014, Barcelona, concerning Nokia. Read on to find out more...

We have come across multiple leaks, rumours and speculations about Nokia’s first Android-powered smartphone – Nokia X – from different sources including some bigger banner media companies to small time leakers in China; however, the latest report comes from none other than the Wall Street Journal with a claim that Nokia X will be releasing at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 later this month.

Unlike other Android devices Nokia X is not going to highlight Google services, but will instead focus on Nokia HERE range of apps and services – at least that’s what the rumours have been indicating.

Further the Nokia X will not be a high-end Android smartphone, but is a gadget with low-to-medium end specifications meant for emerging markets like India where Nokia still holds a good enough market share thanks to its feature phones.

The dual-SIM Nokia X is said to be powered by 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon SoC, 4-inch WVGA screen, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage and support for microSD card, 5-megapixel rear camera, and 1500mAh battery.

Multiple leaks by @evleaks, appearance of the handset on Indonesian and Malaysian certification authorities’ websites, appearance on Vietnam’s top online retailer’s website and other such leaks have all been pointing at an eminent release of Nokia X.

It is also rumoured that Nokia will be revealing Lumia 1820, Lumia 1520, Lumia 635 and other gadgetry at the MWC 2014.

Camp Brings Kids to MWC 2014

MWC mYouth Camp

At this year's Mobile World Congress, 40 kids between the ages of 8 and 14 will get to experience the show. Is this part of a new trend towards child care at tech conferences? They're born mobile, Qualcomm likes to say. So for the first time, the world's largest mobile phone trade show is offering a childrens' program: mYouth Camp, where 40 fortunate kids of attendees will get to learn about 3D printers, coding, digital filmmaking, what the Europeans call "football," and, hopefully, a little bit of mobile tech.

"We want our attendees to view mYouth Camp not as a convenient childcare solution, but as an opportunity for their child to be involved in MWC and to enhance their understanding of the digital / mobile world. We want them to see what a cool industry their parents work in and to understand how hard everyone works to provide these innovative solutions that impact on everything around us every day," camp organizers Merchanservis said in a statement.

MYouth Camp is the most aggressively themed child-care arrangement I've seen in the tech world, but it isn't the first: Google I/O offered child care for the first time in 2013. According to both the GSMA (which runs MWC) and Google, we're now seeing child care at trade shows because of input from women attending them. Google took an even more family-friendly step by making its child care free; the GSMA is charging €100 per 12-hour day.

Outside the tech world, companies such as Corporate Kids Events and KiddieCorp organize camps that are often themed by the location of the corporate meeting, but on-site child care isn't widespread along tech conferences. When I asked the CEA if it was considering doing something similar at CES, the world's largest tech show, the organization said it was focusing on adult attendees.

"As more women travel the meetings and events circuit, features such as additional security for women travelling alone and child care, among others, needed to be considered," the GSMA said.

How Techie Will It Be?So the question becomes: how do you turn a huge trade show into a camp so kids can really see what Mom and Dad do? I have some ideas (several of them involving Samsung S Pens) but the actual plans seem to be in flux so far.

"We have had some strong interest from companies and we are currently reviewing their proposals to see what we can do this year or develop for next," the company said. The kids might get a quick tour of the show, but for safety reasons they'll mostly be kept in their own room on the convention center premises. If the camp succeeds, GSMA and Merchanservis will look at how to integrate the kids' experiences more closely with the show, the organizations said.

"These may be the industry leaders in the future standing up in our auditoriums doing the next MWL keynote," they said, maybe a little over-optimistically - but maybe not, as 9-year-old app developer Alex Jordan proved at last year's TechCrunch Disrupt conference.

The camp has gotten interest from middle-class middle managers in nine countries including Spain, France, the U.S., Israel, and Romania, organizers said. I'll be sending my 8-year-old daughter Nina, who has done some reviews for PCMag.com, to report on it, and you'll hear about it during Mobile World Congress. If you're interested in joining us, you can sign up on the Mobile World Congress Web site.

LG G Pro 2: MWC 2014?

Here is another interesting article speculating on whether LG will release a new version of the LG Optimus Pro. Read on to find out more...

Last year at Mobile World Congress 2013, LG unveiled the Optimus G Pro, a supersized, impressively fast handset that later hit the US market via AT&T. Now that this year's MWC is fast approaching (in just two weeks), there have been several rumors about its successor, which is expected to be called the LG G Pro 2.

While it wouldn't serve as LG's flagship device (that honor would go to the G2 and its subsequent sequels), it's safe to say that the Pro 2 will still be a high-powered, premium phone nonetheless.

For instance, there is speculation that the G Pro 2 will sport top-tier hardware specs, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, and LTE support. And similar to the G2, its physical control keys would be located on the back panel.

As for its display, reports have wavered between the same 5.2-inch screen we saw with the Optimus G Pro, to a slight size-bump of six inches. According to one Korean publication, the phone will also have a 0.4mm bezel, which results in 77 percent of the device being covered with the display.

Other hardware gossip suggests that the LG G Pro 2's camera would feature optical image stabilization, burst-mode shooting, and slow-motion video capture. An upgrade with sound quality has also been considered, with one news site reporting that the phone will have a 1-watt speaker system that'll improve audio by 30 percent, compared to the G Pro.

As for when LG will officially announce this product, sometime during MWC 2014 has been heavily speculated. This makes the most sense since, again, the previous G Pro debuted then as well. However, an unexpected LG event hosted on February 13 in Seoul, Korea, may mean we could all be seeing the device well before the mobile tech show.

Until then, there's still plenty to wonder about the LG G Pro 2.

Samsung Set to Release Galaxy S5 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Next Month

Samsung is expected to release its flagship smartphone next month at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2014.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone has been rumored to launch on or around the scheduled Mobile World Congress, set to take place Feb. 24-27. However, Russian blogger Eldur Murtazin predicts that the launch will come mid-March.

The latest specs rumors surrounding the flagship phone is a fingerprint sensor, much like the sensor packed in Apple's iPhone 5S. This prediction comes from KGI analyst Ming-chi Kuo, who reported that "Fingerprint is necessary for a star model."

This analysis contradicts reports that Samsung will be introducing the all new iris scanning sensor to improve its security.

Kuo, who has a good track record for accurately predicting specs for upcoming smartphones, also said the Galaxy S5 is likely to pack a 32-bit Qualcomm or Exynos processor and a 2560x1440 display resolution. Despite rumors of a Galaxy S4 with metal-casing, Kuo predicts that we will not be seeing the metal version this time.

The phone is claimed to feature a 2850 mAh battery and an improved 16MP camera, up from the 13MP camera sensor packed in the Galaxy S4. This battery size is more realistic than the purported 4000mAh battery.

It has been revealed today that Samsung Electronics sold a record breaking 86 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, surpassing sales of Apple iPhones, according to a report by Strategy Analytics.
Juniper research also released data today, which states that one out of three smartphone owners use a Samsung device. Samsung reportedly shipped over 300 million smartphones last year, out of a total of 980 million units shipped.
