Nokia to resume development of 10-inch Windows RT tablet

nokia windows 8 tablet mockup

Nokia has talked about cooperation with Microsoft, Qualcomm and Compal Electronics to resume development of a 10-inch Windows RT tablet, and is likely to unveil the model at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, during February 25-28, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

Nokia originally planned to develop a 10-inch Windows RT tablet equipped with Qualcomm's S4 processor in first-quarter 2012, with Compal to undertake ODM production and initial shipments of 200,000 units to test the market, the sources indicated. But because Microsoft later announced Surface, and the market for Windows 8/RT tablets needed to be proven, Nokia internally focused on smartphones, and delayed the development of the 10-inch Windows RT tablet, the sources pointed out.

As the sales performance for Windows RT tablets has so far been short of expectations, Nokia is evaluating ordered volumes and has not yet decided on its marketing plans, the sources indicated.

8 Core Processor for Samsung Galaxy S4?

galaxy s4 concept

Samsung’s unannounced flagship Galaxy S4 might just benefit from an eight-core, or octa-core processor once released next year, according to a rumor posted by Korean publication EE Times.

EE Times’ report said that come February 2013, Samsung will be at the International Solid State Circuits Conference, where it will be announcing a new system-on-chip manufactured with 28-nanometer technology.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Eight-Core Processor

This chip will come with two quad-core clusters instead of the standard one cluster; the first half will be clocked at a rate of 1.8 GHz per core and be dedicated to processor-intensive actions, while the other half will be devoted for usual, more energy-efficient smartphone activities and will be clocked at 1.2 GHz per core. This new technology is similar to the so-called “big.little” architecture implemented by ARM, a takeoff on the Nvidia Tegra 3, where an extra fifth core is included in the SoC to maximize energy efficiency.

As exciting as this may sound for potential buyers of the Galaxy S4, the prevailing rumor remains the possibility of an Exynos 5xxx processor powering the handset. This may be a quad-core, 2 GHz processor, and not an octa-core like the SoC described above.

The Galaxy S4 might also feature a 4.99-inch display with full-HD (1080p) capability and 441 pixels per inch, a 13-megapixel rear camera and a larger battery to handle the more powerful processor and other enhanced features. The Galaxy S4 is expected to be unveiled at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Spain, and could be released in May of next year, according to previous rumors.

Samsung Galaxy S4 release date; MWC 2013 or Sooner?

Rumors are running strong on Galaxy S4. As per Samsung’s routine, we can expect release of the device at the Mobile World Congress 2013. But, can we? Rumor mills suggest that we are much near to the next version of its flagship Android phone. What will be the Galaxy S4? Here we take a roundup of rumors about the handset.

1080p Display: It is almost certain that the Galaxy S4 would come out with a 1080p FullHD Super AMOLED display. Samsung is rumored to roll out its rival to the 1080p FullHD LCD display from Sharp and others. As per sources, the Korean tech firm will uncover its innovative display at CES 2013 and Galaxy S4 – the first handset to mount the 4.99-in panel – will be on display at MWC 2013.

The Galaxy S4 display will have a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at a whopping pixel density of 441-ppi. It is also said that the company will use flexible OLED panels instead of the typical glass panels. Anyway, with a 5-in display, the handset will be a stiff rival to the likes of HTC DROID DNA (Deluxe DLX) and other similar phones from Sony, LG and Sharp.

Processor: The new Galaxy S phone is to pack a new dual quad core Exynos chipset. Samsung is almost likely to introduce the new chipset at the International Solid-Stat Circuits Conference in February 2013. The System-on-Chip (SoC), which is based on 28nm process, can clock at 1.8GHz and support the new ARM A15 Cortex.

Many analysts think that Samsung would introduce this new chipset in Galaxy S4. The new processor can provide great performance for the handset in all major aspects. You can watch video and play games quite smoothly on this machine. “The A7 cores should be capable of handling most [smartphone] tasks, with the A15 cores only required for maximum performance needs, like video games,” says Kevin Krewell.

Galaxy S III is already a phone with immense processor performance. Added with 2GB RAM and a high-profile graphical processing unit, the device will be a super phone for next year. Well, it will take on the rivals like HTC DROID DNA and a set of other phones with 1080p FullHD displays.

Camera: We all hoped that Galaxy S III or Galaxy Note II would have a 13MP rear camera. But, they did not get it and Samsung integrated the same 8MP camera of Galaxy S II on both the devices. Now it looks that we could expect a 13MP or better than 8MP camera on the fourth gen Galaxy S phone. Yes, 8MP camera is quite common now and so Samsung may think differently. It may not also go on to introduce the same cam on three versions in a row.

“The Galaxy S4 will feature a 13-megapixel Sony Exmore RS sensor, according to multiple sources, which, if true, means we could finally be getting a Samsung device with a truly high-end camera built into it,” says Know Your Mobile. If rumors are true, S4 would be an ideal phone for photography enthusiasts out there.
Storage: The Galaxy S III is already available in three essential memory options; 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The same options will be available with the new Galaxy S phone. But, the premium model may have the new 10nm 64GB eMMC memory chip, which Samsung recently unveiled. The new memory chip is boasted to become 20 percent smaller and more than 30 percent faster than the present NAND standards. So we can certainly expect the handsets in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions as well.

Release Date: Samsung used to introduce new variants to its Galaxy S phones at MWC. This time also, it may come in the same technology trade show, most rumors suggest. The device will go for sales in April or May 2013.

No Apple iPhone 5S in mid-2013?

mobile world congress 2013 barcelona

A recent rumor put Apple considering a mid-2013 release for another iPhone, tentatively named the iPhone 5S. This would put it around the same time as its annual developer conference, where Apple used to announce new iPhone models. Could it be planning a return to WWDC?

The iPhone 5 has been discussed since the beginning of the year, but now it has gone on sale, it’s out with the old and in with the new. Cue the rumors about its upcoming replacement. We haven’t yet heard anything about features or spec changes. For now, the talk is all about its release date. DigiTimes, the Chinese publication that has a wildly varying success rate with this type of thing, has estimated the iPhone 5S – if that’s what it’ll be called – will be released in mid-2013, a date provided by those working in the supply network. What’s surprising is, if true, Apple will have abandoned its traditional yearly refresh cycle for yet another product.

iPad 4 all over again

When Apple announced the iPad Mini it also updated the full size iPad, giving it a new processor and changing the old 30-pin connector for the Lightning connector seen on the iPhone 5. The November 2 release came a little more than seven-and-a-half months after the release of the iPad 3, which was unceremoniously discontinued.

Anyone who had just purchased a new iPad was rightfully upset, but few expected the level of outrage the fourth-generation iPad’s announcement would generate. A poll of 2,000 iPad owners in the U.S., conducted by Toluna QuickSurveys, found 45-percent were “disgruntled” with Apple’s decision.

Mid-2013?

A mid-2013 release date would see the iPhone 5S arrive around eight or nine months after the iPhone 5, a considerable change from the 11 months between the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, and even more so from the iPhone 4 to 4S, which took 15 months.

If Apple took some heat over the iPad 4, it’s nothing compared to what it would receive should the iPhone 5S come halfway through the iPhone 5’s expected life. Smartphone ownership isn’t the same as tablet ownership, as in this case not even those with 12-month contracts could upgrade without incurring a fee.

A return to the old days

For the first four years of the iPhone’s life, Apple announced and released new iPhones at the beginning of the summer. That is, until 2011, when it debuted the iPhone 4S in October rather than during its Worldwide Developer Conference in June.

WWDC turned out to be an all-software show that year, and the iPhone 4S took center stage at its own event later on.

Having gone to the trouble of shifting the launch dates around, and following it again for the iPhone 5, could Apple be considering switching back to a WWDC iPhone announcement?

Possibly…

The Worldwide Developer Conference is Apple’s primary annual event. In 2011, we were treated to previews of OS X Lion, iOS 5, Siri, iCloud, iTunes in the Cloud, and iTunes Match. This year hardware made a return, with the announcement of new MacBooks, the MacBook Pro with Retina, iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion. And since then, we’ve had another MacBook Retina and a refreshed iMac range.

So what’s in store for WWDC 2013? We assume a new version of OS X, version 10.9, is inevitable, as is discussion about iOS 7. As for hardware, will the similarly rumored Apple TV make an appearance? If not, the “iPhone 5S” could fill a hole.

But why would Apple want to bring the iPhone back to WWDC? Arch-rival Samsung may have something to do with it, as it’s likely to launch the Galaxy S4 during an event in May – or as some rumors have stated, late February at Mobile World Congress - leaving Apple slightly behind the curve in terms of brand new hardware to flaunt.

The 5S is also likely to be another incremental release, much like the iPad 4, which could suggest Apple plans to experiment with a six month refresh for iOS devices before a redesigned model is launched after 12 months.

But probably not

DigiTimes has a spotty record at Apple rumors. This year, it correctly pegged the iPhone 5’s release as September but tripped up when it came to features and materials used in its construction.

The last time Apple launched an iPhone at WWDC was in 2010, when it focused exclusively on that and iOS, with no OS X announcements at all during the two-hour event. Considering Apple has been updating OS X annually now, it seems unlikely to abandon it during the show next year.

Although a refreshed iPhone released part way through the year would stop that dip in sales Apple usually sees in the run up to a new iPhone being announced, it could alienate as many buyers as it would attract. Recent figures showed 16 million iPhone 4S phones were sold nearly a year after launch, so it’s not as if it’s trickling out the door. The iPhone 5 is still a rarity in stores, and the company still hasn’t released the device across the globe yet. Why would it be thinking of another model so soon, when it can’t make the existing one fast enough?

The Samsung argument doesn’t wash either, as it’s not really Apple’s style to worry about the competition so much that it alters its plans. Look at the iPad Mini. It came out long after everyone else was producing cheap 7-inch tablets at a far higher price tag. Apple prefers to battle Samsung in the courtroom, leaving its products to do the talking on the street.

Some analysts also don’t agree with DigiTimes’ mid-2013 release date either. Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster says the next iPhone will be out in September 2013, which is in keeping with an annual update schedule.

Most of all though, Apple has to be mindful of annoying its usually loyal customers. Like the iPad 4, releasing a new iPhone so quickly could come off as money grabbing, and the backlash could be more serious.

While we won’t know for sure until after WWDC 2013, or at least until we approach the summer months, it seems probable that the iPhone 5S won’t be present at the show and for once, we’re sure most people will be pleased.

2013 Will See An iPhone 5 Rival Produced By Sony

This year we have seem some amazing improvements made to smartphones and we have also seen some manufacturers fall behind the front runners in the market . Those that are at the top are Apple and Samsung who have given us the popular iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3 devices. We have not heard much from Sony this year however it has been said by the company executives that there will be an exciting release in 2013.

mobile world congress 2013

Dennis Van Schie who is the Chief of Mobile Sales for the company recently spoke to the Financial Times Deutschland and said “We will create in the near future a flagship model that can compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III”. This is the first indication that we have seen to indicate a major new device from the company. Tech Crunch recently reported that the new model is expected to be shown at MWC and CES 2013 in early 2013. The top phone currently in their range is the Xperia T which is a great premium device that sports a powerful 1.5Ghz dual core processor and a great 4.6 inch 720P screen. The iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 may be in trouble if the company are aiming to better an already impressive phone.

Mr Van Schie was also questioned by Financial Times Deutschland regarding Sony producing a Windows 8 device. There have been many companies including Samsung and HTC that have been producing devices that will run on this platform. Sony have not dismissed this idea. Mr Van Schie said that “We have a good relationship with Microsoft and the development of Windows Phone are watching closely. If it succeeds, we will not be caught off guard”. As Sony have mentioned the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 when talking about their latest premium range device we expect it to a special phone and it sounds like we do not have long to wait for it to hit the shelves.

The mobile phone market is currently dominated by Apple and Samsung and their impressive devices the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3. We expect Sony’s latest release to be impressive as it needs to compete with these phones.

Wireless Broadband Alliance & Small Cell Forum Cooperate to Integrate Wi-Fi Hotspots & Small Cells

Wi-Fi Global Congress, San Francisco – 5th November 2012

The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), the industry association focused on driving the next generation Wi-Fi experience, and the Small Cell Forum, the independent industry and operator association that supports small cell deployment worldwide, today announced they will work together to integrate Wi-Fi hotspots and licensed small cells.

Telecom operators worldwide are increasingly deploying both licensed and unlicensed technologies - in the form of small cells and public Wi-Fi - making this an opportune time to examine how they can be best integrated. By employing both technologies, operators can significantly improve the user experience through dramatically increased network capacity and with advanced traffic management techniques. Furthermore, by integrating the two technologies they can also lower device, infrastructure installation and backhaul costs.

The two organizations will cooperate on a range of initiatives including simple measures such as looking at how small cells could impact the WBA and GSMA's efforts to simplify Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) access, and sharing best practices for optimizing the user experience and operator deployment strategies for joint Wi-Fi/small cell hotspots. The WBA's NGH program is already making public Wi-Fi more accessible by removing the need for usernames and passwords. Major operators globally are currently trialling these new hotspots and deployments are expected imminently.

However, more ambitiously, the organisations will also look at how to integrate Wi-Fi and small cells on a network level, instead of simply using Wi-Fi to provide a pipe into the cellular network. This could allow Wi-Fi hotspots to support cellular services such as voice and SMS, as well as enable enhanced integrated services such as advanced traffic management and smart offloading features over the radio interfaces as well as within the backend networks, resulting in the best possible user experience.

barcelona event organisation

JR Wilson, Chairman of the Wireless Broadband Alliance said: "This agreement builds a bridge between the Wi-Fi and cellular worlds. Our two organisations bring together the key fixed, mobile and Wi-Fi operator and vendor players. Furthermore, we both enjoy close relationships with the respective standards bodies – the Wi-Fi Alliance, IEEE and 3GPP. This means we have the clout to turn the vision of integrating Wi-Fi hotspots and small cells into a reality. The NGH program will now encompass the advances that emerge from this new cooperation paving the way for a truly converged future. Customers will benefit from a highly dependable, easy to use, seamless service across many different network technologies."

Gordon Mansfield, the Small Cell Forum's Chairman said: "The days of Wi-Fi vs cellular are dead. Both technologies are crucial for supporting the never ending growth in data traffic. In the long term, each technology alone cannot meet this challenge - success can only be achieved by aligning the two. Wi-Fi hotspots are proving a valuable tool for managing surging mobile data traffic. Small cells, which now outnumber macrocells globally, represent the future of cellular as it strives to achieve new levels of coverage and capacity for all mobile devices. By bringing the two together, we can deliver a better experience for all users across all devices."

The two organisations will begin working together immediately and plan to test technical progress at future Small Cell Forum plugfests and at the Wireless Broadband Alliance NGH trials. Today's news follows announcements made in Q1 2012 by the Wireless Broadband Alliance regarding its work with the GSMA and the Small Cell Forum's publication of a whitepaper on the case for intelligently integrating Wi-Fi and small cells.

Skype 3.0 for Android brings tablet optimized UI

skype mobile world congress 2013

Skype’s new version 3.0 of it’s Android app has put tablet users square in it’s sights. The new Skype update is optimized to bring a more functional version of Skype to tablet users. Along with the normal features of Skype such as video calling, sending and receiving instant messages, sharing pictures, and making calls to mobiles and landlines worldwide, 3.0 users will get a break from those sometimes teeny, distant sounding voice calls. Skype’s new codec, dubbed SILK sounds promising;

“Skype 3.0 copes well with the often varying speeds of Internet connections, ensuring that the audio quality is always the best it can be.”

Visually, Skype 3.0 takes advantage of tablet screen real estate, locking the screen in a horizontal position, and allowing for switching between front facing and rear cameras.

Samsung Galaxy S4 rumours predict launch in January 2013

Galaxy-S4
Will the Samsung Galaxy S4 release in January?

Samsung Galaxy S4 rumours have hit the market, days after iPhone 5S manufacturing reports surfaced. It is reported that Galaxy S4 is speculated to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2013. Samsung had earlier refuted reports about the release of Galaxy S4 at the Mobile World Congress in February 2013.

Galaxy S4 is rumoured to feature the South Korean company’s manufactured Exynos 5450 chipset with a powerful Cortex A15 quad-core processor and a 13MP rear camera. The display of the Galaxy S4 is alleged to be a Super AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution on a 5-inch screen.

5-inch screen smartphones seem to be increasing with time and Samsung might be looking to enter that market with the release of Galaxy S4. HTC had recently released Droid DNA for US markets, which sports a 5-inch screen. Samsung has neither confirmed nor denied the speculations about the device, which the South Korean company is rumoured to release at CES 2013.

Many technical experts believe that there is still a long time ahead for the successor of Galaxy S3, which is the best selling smartphone for Samsung, but the rumour mills need no affirmation from the South Korean company and the experts. With Samsung releasing Galaxy S3 mini and reports suggesting the launch of a revamped Galaxy S2 Plus by the South Korean company, S4 seems a distant, but possible future.

Samsung Galaxy S3 has created new sales records for the company and it might look to increase the numbers with the launch of Galaxy S4, but the time of the release still remains uncertain.

New Colors for Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3 Mini in 2013?

Android Central

With the Galaxy S3, Samsung's proven it's not afraid of adding a bit of color to its smartphone line-up. A few months back, the manufacturer debuted new colors for its Galaxy S3, including garnet red, amber brown and sapphire black. And next year it seems two more Samsung devices might be due a fresh coat of paint, specifically the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 Mini.

According to reports from SamMobile, which has proved pretty accurate with Samsung leaks in the past, the Korean manufacturer will introduce three new colors for the Note 2 early next year, and the S3 Mini in December or early 2013.

The site's sources say the S3 Mini will appear in "Titan Gray, Garnet Red and Onyx Black," while the Note 2 will get "Amber Brown, Topaz Blue and Ruby Wine." The change in nomenclature for the blue and red versions of the Note 2 suggests these might look a bit different to "Pebble Blue" and "Garnet Red"-finished Galaxy S3s.

SamMobile says Samsung will showcase the new colors at Mobile World Congress 2013, although given the alleged release timing, we think there's a chance they might also make a surprise appearance at CES in January. Either way, we'll live from both both shows over the next few months.

Huawei Ascend W2 images leaked online

Images of the Huawei Ascend W2, Huawei’s flagship Windows Phone 8 device, have surfaced online, showcasing the looks of the high-end smartphone.

When Windows Phone 8 was announced, Huawei was one of the first companies listed that would launch a Windows Phone 8 powered device along with Samsung, HTC and Nokia.

The big three have already showcased and launched their respective Windows Phone 8 powered devices. Better later than never though, now images of the Huawei Ascend W2 have leaked online.

Winp.cn indicates that the smartphone will have an 8MP rear camera with dual LED flash, apart from a front facing camera. Other speculation suggests that the smartphone will have a 4.5-inch display, dual-core processor and will support 4G LTE connectivity.

In the past, we have heard rumours that Huawei would launch the W1, which would be powered by Windows Phone 8 in October 2012, but that hasn't happened. We suspect that both the device will be unveiled at CES in January 2013 or at the Mobile World Congress 2013 in February.

Samsung was the first to announce a Windows Phone 8 powered smartphone, the Ativ S, closely followed by Nokia who showed off the Lumia 920 which is their flagship Windows Phone 8 device along with the mid range Lumia 820. HTC has also shown off the HTC Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S that are powered by WP8.

Busy Times for UK Telecoms Regulator Ofcom

The last few days have been particularly busy for UK telecoms regulator Ofcom. It started the week by announcing its rules for next year’s UK 4G mobile spectrum auction – expect services to go live in around six months – and it ended the week with plans to avoid a 5G capacity crunch.

Meanwhile Three UK revealed that its DC-HSDPA 3G services (which it had originally described as 4G, but let’s not talk about that now) were hitting the same kind of speeds as 4G customers have been enjoying.

Confusing for consumers? Perhaps, although no more confusing than Nokia’s new maps business. Taking a tip from the Book of Really Literal Company Names (last seen on the shelf at Everything Everywhere) the Finnish company has rebranded its mapping and location business unit as HERE. Already on the cards is a free HTML5-based HERE maps application for iOS.

Also last week we learned that BlackBerry 10 would launch on 30th January 2013, which means the new BlackBerry 10 smartphones will be available on… oh, hang on, we don’t know yet. Probably no later than the end of Mobile World Congress in February, if RIM has any sense.

In addition, RIM added voice calling to its BBM instant messaging service; effectively VoIP via WiFi. Rather reminiscent of Microsoft’s Live Messenger announcement from last week.

Vodafone UK announced a smartphone leasing deal, Telefonica launched a mobile-based footfall tracking service for businesses and Tradedoubler brought affiliate marketing to mobile applications.

Meanwhile, research told us that wireless power for mobile devices would be worth over £3 billion by 2020, mobile accessories would be worth £39 billion by 2017 and mobile coupon use was expected to rise by 30% next year.

Finally, as patent-related legal battles rage around the world, there’s news of a settlement. Apple and HTC have agreed to dismiss all current lawsuits and have put a ten-year license agreement in place to cover current and future patents. Could this be the shape of things to come throughout the mobile industry?

Probably not. But It would be nice to think so.

Sony promises top-end handset to compete with GS III and iPhone

Sony promises topend handset to compete with GS III and iPhone, implies its existing flagship doesn't

Sony Mobile's sales chief, Dennis van Schie, has gone on the record with a pledge that just about crosses the line from marketing to manifesto. Speaking to the Financial Times Deutschland, he said Sony "will create, in the near future, a flagship model that can compete with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III." Such a claim doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement of the manufacturer's existing top-end offering, the fast yet flawed Xperia TL, but it does raise our hopes for CES, since FTD reports that the superphone in question will be presented in early 2013 at both the Las Vegas show and Mobile World Congress. On a related note, van Schie also promised that Sony's chaotic array of online storefronts would become better integrated by the end of 2013, with every user being able to use a single ID across all their devices to access content -- something that sounds simple, but evidently isn't.

Registration for the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2013 Now Open

mobile world congress 2013
Historically, the GSMA always used to delay the registration process for media representatives for a while after regular attendees were allowed to register their interest in attending its flagship event – the Mobile World Congress. However, this is not the case with MWC Barcelona 2013. The registration process opened for absolutely everyone today [November 13th 2012]. Press need to go here. GoMobile News would urge all of its readers to register as soon as possible because this is very definitely a not-to-be-missed event and regarded by many as the place to be if you even remotely regard yourself as a shaker and mover in the mobile/cellular world. Here at GoMobile Towers we are particularly intrigued by the app which supports MWC 2013 which is known as My MWC.

The show’s organisers, the GSMA, describe My MWC as “the exclusive social networking tool for MWC attendees.”

It goes on to say that, “The tool has been completely redesigned and will enable more efficient networking before, during and after the event.”

The GSMA also adds that improvements to My MWC include a much improved mobile app version and better business deal matchmaking.

When it is released – and the GSMA is promising that this will happen next week, you should be able to find more details about what the app does here.

Previously, the My MWC app was a web based application to ensure that all flavours of smartphone could access the service – not just Android and iPhone.

The app was supplied to the GSMA by the US based Zenista. See my previous story here.

However, GoMobile News is prepared to speculate that there might be OS specific versions for iOS and Android in 2013 whilst the other mobile OS users still access it via the mobile web.

Anyway, the first thing that you should do is register for MWC 2013 by going here.

It is interesting to note that the GSMA is offering Fast Track collection of badges from Barcelona Airport’s Terminal 1.

It doesn’t give times and dates for the Fast Track service and warns that not all types of passes are available via the Fas tTrack service.
